The Dog Days Of Summer

That headline isn’t supposed to be a pun. This is the least active time of the year for sports. All we have is baseball, at least in most years. But now, we have Bonds going after Aaron and the courts, one of the World’s greatest soccer players coming to the US, and a marquee NFL player who could be in federal prison by the end of the year. Plus, this weekend was the British Open, and one of the most important boxing matches in years.

Even though two of the three stories are horrible, we could look back at this summer as one of the most significant in sports history. There are no Olympics or World Cup to keep us interested, so all our attention is on these three stories. And in each case, the final outcome for Beckham, Bonds, and Vick will affect their sports, and America, for years to come. -MLM
